Logging off and closing open programs is essential to maintaining security. It prevents unauthorized users from gaining access to private information.
No matter which operating system you use, make sure to:
- exit out of all Unix sessions
- exit out of e-mail sessions and/or close e-mail programs
- close web browsers
- close all open files
Windows 8 / 8.1
- From the Charms Menu, Click on your username / select Sign out
Windows 7
- Press Ctrl – Alt – Del
- If the Windows Security shows up, select Log Off…
- If the Task Manager shows up, select Shutdown then Log Off
OR
- Click Start
- If Log Off <username>… is listed, select Log Off…
- If only Shut Down… is listed, Click on the Right Arrow and then choose Log Off… at the next window
Windows XP
- Press Ctrl – Alt – Del
- If the Windows Security shows up, select Log Off…
- If the Task Manager shows up, select Shutdown then Log Off
OR
- Click Start
- If Log Off <username>… is listed, select Log Off…
- If only Shut Down… is listed, Select Shut Down and then choose Log Off… at the next window
