Anti-Malware Software

Why Do I Need Anti-Malware Software?

Our combined security consists of multiple layers.  Having a local anti-malware program actively protecting your local system is just one part of the layers to protect you, our networks, and the University. It is also a requirement of the Minimum Security Standards.

The purpose of anti-malware programs is to actively check and protect against malicious activity on your device. Some programs include firewalls, web browsing protection, and more.

Campus Anti-Malware Software Information

As of Oct 28, 2021, UCLA no longer provides a university-funded antivirus solution for personal devices.  Please make sure you uninstall Sophos.  Here are uninstall instructions for MacOS and Windows.

For personally owned devices, there are a number of freely available antivirus products on the market for your use. Please check and use one that works for you.  Some of them are:
Sophos Home Edition
AVG Antivirus Free
Avast Free Antivirus
Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition
Microsoft Safety Scanner
Microsoft Defender Antivirus in Windows
Please note that vendors will have different variants including paid versions that include other functionality.  It is up to you to obtain and use an up to date anti-malware program to be in compliance with standards.

For one-time scans, you can use:
Microsoft Defender Offline

For University-Owned devices, please contact SEASnet’s Help Desk for more information on transitioning to FireEye Endpoing Security (FES).
