Cloud Services

UCLA approves the use of some general cloud services in support of the University’s mission. Cloud services not authorized by UC are not sanctioned and are not supported. Cloud service “click-through agreements” may only be approved by campus purchasing. Individual faculty and staff do not have the authorization to approve the license in the name of the UC Regents. In addition, because of the particular configuration of cloud services, each service has specific requirements surrounding the type of data that may be stored.  It is the responsibility of the end user to clearly understand these policies and to adhere to them.

UCLA Approved Cloud Services are those cloud services offered by official University service providers, such as Box offered by campus IT services and Google Apps for Education for faculty and staff. The UCLA Approved Cloud Services website provides information about what type of data may be stored for each service. Additional information about data security and cloud services can also be found there.

The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science provides email services for staff, faculty, and graduate students.  For security purposes, HSSEAS recommends only School-provided email services be used by staff and for the research work of our faculty and graduate students. Use of unofficial cloud services by staff, faculty, and graduate students in HSSEAS is not supported and not recommended.

SEASnet is currently investigating the possibility of a Google Apps for Education option for HSSEAS faculty, staff, and students.
