A Featured Scholars Lecture given by Professor Asad Abidi
Antennas as Circuits with Unconstrained Waves
Date: Thursday, May 10th
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 PM
Where: Shannon Room, Engr. IV 54-134
Wireless links in every home, lab, automobile, library and café, in every
pocket and backpack, in sensors, medical and other instruments, and of
course in every broadcast radio and TV receiver, demonstrate that a very
important product of EE has penetrated deeply into everyday life today. Those
who study the circuits and systems aspects of wireless links are often not
very much at home with the antenna, the transducer that distinguishes a
wireless system from a system that uses wires only. In this informal
tutorial, we will look at the antenna in a qualitative way as a circuit
element which, at its terminals, interfaces to waves. Using classical wave
optics, we can derive equivalent circuits, and properties such as radiation
resistance and the transfer function from one antenna to another. This
helps us understand the limitations of wireless links.
This approach to antennas may bring useful insights to circuit and systems
engineers, but it does not substitute for a rigorous understanding based on
EM theory. Bring a pencil, paper, and an eager mind!

LearnIT.ucla.edu (Lynda.com)
UCLA students now have unlimited access to a full range of online software training videos and materials. This unlimited license will be in place through June 2012. To access an online tutorial go to: www.LearnIT.ucla.edu and log in with your UCLA ID and password.
This year's usage will determine the value of this training resource to the campus and whether UCLA will acquire the license again next year. We'll be conducting an extensive survey on use of the materials in Spring 2012, and your participation in the survey will be critical to establishing the value of these training materials. When the survey is conducted, we hope you'll participate.
If you have any questions or comments please contact Michelle Chen on the UCLA IT Digital Citizen team at mchen@OIT.ucla.edu
